Guidelines on Exemption from Chinese Language Courses for International Graduate Students
at Harbin Institute of Technology, Shenzhen
To align with our commitment to “student-centered education that fosters individual growth and success”, HITsz offers international graduate students with strong proficiency in Chinese—the ability to converse fluently and read discipline-specific materials in Chinese—the opportunity to apply for exemption from Chinese speaking courses. This policy aims to give them more time for academic research and enhancing their innovative skills. Upon approval, students will receive credits for the courses without the need to attend classes, and the grades will be marked as “Exempt”. These courses will not be factored into their GPA calculation. The exemption policy is as follows:
I. Exemption Eligibility
International graduate students whose primary language of instruction is English may apply for an exemption from the Chinese speaking course if they meet one of the following criteria. Eligibility criteria:
1. HSK Level 3 or above (valid for 2 years);
2. Completion of a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from another institution in China;
3. Chinese major certificate or diploma, Bachelor or Master Degree.
II. Application and Review Process
Students must log in to the Undergraduate and Graduate Academic Management and Service Platform (http://jw.hitsz.edu.cn/) within two weeks of the term’s start to submit their application. Late applications will not be considered.
The attachment is Instruction for Chinese Courses Exemption. The exemption will take effect automatically after approval by the corresponding college. Students must submit supporting documents, including proof of grades or graduation and degree certificates. The academic records submitted must include course names, study periods, class hours, assessment results, and bear the official seal of the issuing institution.
These Guidelines were issued for trial implementation starting with the 2023 international graduate students.
